ARRIVAL OF THE "LORD ASHLE Y."
NON-ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MADL AT MELBOURNE. PANAMA ROUTE SETTLED. PLEURO-PNEUMONIA IN SOUTHLAND IN OTAGO. The Lord Ashley arrived at half-past 3 yesterday afternoon, without the English mail, — the steamer from Galle not having been signalled at Melbourne on the 18th, when the " Gothenburgh " left. The news is unimportant. Preparations were making in Otago for the arrival of the cricketors from Victoria. A public meeting had been held in Dunedin, at which resolutions were passed against the seat of government being held at Wellington. Among the passengers by the Ashley were His Honor Mr. Justice Johnston, for Napier, and Major Dwyer on his way to the front. The Otago Witness of the 23rd instant publishes an extract from a letter received by Mr. Bell from Mr. Ward, in which it is stated that the "Inter-Colonial Company had taken the contract, and were setting about carrying it out." Pleuro-Pneumonia had broken out in Southland, and in the Districts of Waikouaiti, and East Taeri in the province of Otago. The disease, it it stated, had been introduced by cattle imported from Australia. The Superintendents of Otago and Southland had issued proclamations declaring certain districts infected.
