two years’ work. She was then, a Paramount star, and her Paramount contract still had several; months to run. But Warners were’ so” anxious to get her that they were willing to sign her up immediately and wait patiently until she had served her time with Paramount. There was a reason for this cut-throat competition for Miss Cliatterton’s services. Her box office receipts that year were the largest of any star. She was “the first lady of the screen” .... universally regarded as the greatest dramatic actress of the talkies. But when she seemed to have reached the summit of her ‘career she was actually starting on- the downward path. She accepted Warner Brothers’ offer against advice and immediately her pictures began to deteriorate. Paramount seemed to lose interest in
her and during the last few months in which she worked for them her films were not worthy of her, and must have done her a Jot of harm. Warner Brothers excel in the production of fast-moving comedies or farces and snappy melodramas. Ruth Chatterton shines in serious drama with a hint of tragedy. Such a producerstar association was an obvious .misfit and was doomed to failure from the start. Her last film before her retirement w r as made about the beginning of 1931.
