SMART SAVE BY BRIGADE

NOLANTOWN FIRE SUPPRESSED

OLD DWELLING THREATENED.

A smart savo was effected by the Hawera fire brigade shortly after 8 o’clock last night, when fire had destroyed a small wood and coal shed and had done slight damage to the wall of a kitchen in a nine-roomed house in Burn Street, Nolantown. The house stands well back from the road, but the brigade quickly ran out 400 feet of hose. The damage is estimated at about £25.

The occupants, Mr and Mrs SLaurence, were sitting in front of a fire in the front portion of the house and knew notmng of the outbreak until a passer-by roused them, while a companion gave the alarm. No damage was done to the contents of the house as the flames did not penetrate the kitchen wall.

• The cause of the outbreak is unknown. Mr Laurence passed the shed shortly after Y.SO o’clock, but saw no sign of fire. The house was erected many years ago and was formerly occupied by the late Sir Robert Nolan. It is now the property of the Anglican Church. PATEA COTTAGE RAZED. MONEY LOST IN FLAMES. A four-roomed cottage occupied by Louis Lee, market gardener, Wilson road. Patea, was totally destroyed by fire at about 8 o’clock last night. No water was available as the cottage was outside the boundary. Although the Patea fire brigade was present, it could take no action and nothing was saved. It is believed that a sum of money, over £IOO, was. lost in the fire. The fire was spectacular, and a strong south-west wind fanned /the flames, the building being razed to the ground. The cottage was situated about half a mile out of the Patea borough.
