R. S. A. BALL

Funtion at Patea

The Patea Returned Soldiers’ Association annual ball, held in the Patea Town Hall on Tuesday night, proved an outstanding success and there was a large attendance from all parts of the district and the proceeds were in aid of the Distressed Soldiers’ Relief Fund. In the main body of the hall fern fronds and coloured lights was the motif of decorations and on the front of the dress circle was hung a large photograph of King George. The stage was cleverly arranged to represent a section of a trench out of which appeared a Lewis gun and above the trench was hung a large replica of the R.ts.A. badge and the Union Jack. The supper room walls were decorated with fern fronds and autumn-tinted flowers, and Iceland poppies, jonquils, buttercup arcasia, fresh greenery and amber streamers making dainty table decorations, arranged by Mesdames Herbert and Petersen. From early in the morning a band of ladies, under Mrs W. T. Simmons, had worked hard to prepare and set out the supper, and they were heartily congratulated on the success of their efforts, the delicious savouries, sandwiches and cakes, with hot saveloys, being greatly appreciated by the dancers. Vinsen’s Ambassadors Dance Band helped in no small way to complete the evening’s enjoyment. Exhibition dances were given by the Misses E. and I- Matthews (Wanganui) and during the evening Dr AV. T. Simmons, on behalf of; the Returned Soldiers’ Association, thanked all for their attendance and explained that the reason for the ball was to obtain funds to help soldiers in distress. He also thanked all who had contributed towards the supper and those who had prepared it. Major Conway, N.Z.S.O. (NeW Plymouth) presented to Lieut. R. . AY .
