Sir George Grey has succeeded in carrying his Law Practitioners Bill, the main provision of which is to dispense with the general knowledge examination, and to give to persons in court the right to choose ail advocate, even if they have to go outside the profession for him. *****

It is not often that the distance between Auckland and Wellington is accomplished on lost, but the feat has just been completed by Messrs W. H. Rulford and F. J. Greenwood, both of Auckland. They arrived from Wellington on June 22, having walked the distance of nearly 600 miles in 20 days, or, including stoppages’ in. 25 days. Their longest day’s record was 47 miles, and they were compelled to cross one river no less than 47 times. *** • # *

The “Taranaki Herald’s” Stratford correspondent grumbles at Saturday’s railway timetable. Under the present arrangements, passengers coming down the lme are required to spend over five hours in Hawera. This means, however, for those settlers living up the line getting out of the train in the dark, and for those who live some distance from the railway, travelling it may be, two or three miles through some muddv bush road. .* ,* ** ;• * ' .* We are given to understand that an association of sawmillers within the district of Taranaki has been formed for the purpose of protecting the interests of the trade in the district and to promote the export of timber. Meetings have been held, with the result that an agreement has been come to between them to raise tho price of timber slightly, which was found necessary to make it pay. **‘ * * * 'A deputation from the temperance people of Wellington waited on the refreshment committee of the exhibition relative to vendors of alcoholic liquors at the exhibition. The committee decided to take the matter into consideration, and make representations to the Government.
