PATEA’S NARROW VICTORY

TWO POINTS OVER KAPONGA PLAY PAST AND OPEN. LOSERS’ HALF-TIME LEAD.

; Ivaponga started oil well against Pa* - tea to gain a seven-point lead, thanks [ to magnificent kicking by the veteran l C. Paterson. For a considerable while : afterwards it seemed that they were 'to retain this margin, but the bright passing of the Patea" back line proved ir- , resistible, each of the three tries scored by Patea coming from back movements. On the whole it was a bright, open game, although realising the superior-’ ity of the Patea backs, the Ivaponga forwards made every effort to keep play as tight as possible. The Patea pack on the other hand were giving their backs every opportunity, sending the ball back in great style. The teams were: Ivaponga: S. Williams; Blair, Cuff, Paterson; Walker, James; Arnold; J. Gardner, Thoumine, West, Benton, H. Gardner, Hodge, F. Gargan, Williams. Patea: D. Hunt; Hill, Edwards, Rowlands; Zimmerman, Bourke; Gudgeon; Crawford, Baldwin, Bremer, Richards, Hunt, Woodford, McTaggart, Henare. Patea were the first to attack, but a good dribbling rush, headed by Walker, carried the play to Pa tea’s twenty-five. A Patea back movement broke down, the ball going out to Paterson, who, taking his time, potted a beautiful goal from well out. .Ivaponga 4—Patea 0. Bourke opened a dangerous move when he cut in to send out to Edwards, who outpaced the opposition, a try appearing certain when, with only the full-back to beat, his pass to Hill went

astray. The ball went out and from the resulting line-out the Ivaponga forwards took play back to Patea l territory. All of the Patea backs handled in a good run, but danger was averted' when Edwards was forced out on the Ivaponga twenty-five line. The Patea pack were feeding Gudgeon and the back-line was seeing plenty of the ball,

but could make little impression. Zimmerman started a good run, but with, a clear field in front of him Edwards failed to take a' difficult pass. Headed by Gargan, the Ivaponga forwards took play downfield and in a melee just inside the Patea twenty-five line Baldwin' got offside for Paterson to kick a beautiful goal from wide out. Ivaponga 7—Patea 0. Patea attacked and from a penalty, ten yards inside of half-way, Rowlands kicked a poster. The ball bounced back to Williams, who failed to find the line, Bourke securing possession to centre, sending Zimmerman and Edwards away, the latter being pushed out almost on the Ivaponga line. McTaggart went over from the line-out, Rowlands failing to add the extra' points. Ivaponga 7—Patea o.

Fast open play in midfield saw halftime called with no further score.

"Working hard, the Ivaponga forwards, with Gargan and Gardner showing out, kept play tight and had Patea on the defensive throughout the early part of the second spell, Paterson, with welljudged short kicks, repeatedly finding the line to gain ground. Finally Hunt cleared, Patea taking up the attack when Bourke stab-punted, the bounce beating the blue backs who had follow-

ed up fast. The Ivaponga forwards again carried play into Patea’s twentyfive, Bourke clearing with a fine kick. Gudgeon went round the scrum in a brilliant solo dash and with only the

full-back to pass sent the ball to Richards, who was overhauled by Cuff. AVilliams cleared momentarily, but from a scrum Gudgeon sent the ball to Hill, who dashed down the line, sending on to Baldwin, for the latter to score wide out. Rowlands made a great effort to •convert from a difficult angle. Ivaponga 7—Patea (i. Another try for Patea seemed certain when Bourke had two men outside of him with a clear field, but elected to go on his own, being tackled by Cuff. Ivaponga again took u.p the attack, but Gudgeon and Edwards were associated

in a brilliant exchange of passing to run practically the length of the field. Williams relieved with a 1 good kick and the Kaponga forwards took play back to Patents twenty-five, where Paterson missed with a pot. Eichards kicked downfield and following up fast Zimmerman booted further on. Just outside of Patea's twenty-five Edwards secured and after dribbling ten yards picked up to dash over for a good try. Bourke failed with the kick. Pa tea 9 —Kaponga 7. Kaponga attacked hotly, Hill changing the situation by securing from a melee to send to Edwards, who made a run along the line to be pushed out just short of his objective. The game ended a couple of minutes later with the final score: Pa tea 9—Kaponga 7. - Mr G. Hurley was the referee.
