RELIEF FOR SINGLE MEN

Those With No Fixed Abode Should Be Unemployed Charge HOSPITAL BOARD OPINION REQUEST FOR SUBSIDY “This should definitely be a charge on the Unemployment Board,” said Mr W. G. Simpson at a meeting of the Hawera. Hospital Board this morning, when a letter was received from the hoard stating that nothing could be done to provide sustenance for unemployed; single men travelling the roads of New Zealand.

Those present generally expressed sympathy- with the men, although Mr ■S. J. Bennett referred to the few replies received for the many farm 'positions advertised in the newspapers. As there were so many men on the reacts ho considered that there should' bo more than the one or two replies usually received. Several speakers pointed out that the farmer wanted trained men, and this was probably the reason for so few replies. After a brief discussion it was decided on the motion of Mr Simpson to recommend tho Unemployment i Board to make subsidies to hospital boards with a view to alleviating the position. The resolution did not go far enough, said Mr I. J. Bridger, who moved a resolution, which was later adopted, that a letter should be forwarded to the Minister of Employment protesting against the Unemployment Board’s inability to provide sustenance for single men, who were forced to travel the roads in search of work.
