COMMERCIAL AIR SERVICES

BOARD HEARS APPLICATIONS. SOME OBJECTIONS RAISED. (By Telegrapn—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Juno 13. The Transport Co-ordination Board to-day heard applications by New Zealand Airways, Ltd., for services from Whangarei to Gisborne,* Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, following routes which it is stated will differ sufficiently from the services already granted to warrant a license. Decision was reserved. The amended routes applied for are from Whangarei to Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Whakatane, Gisborne, with an extension to Russell if required, and from Auckland to Rotorua, Napier, Masterton and Wellington. Permission is being sought to utilise other adjacent towns as the ground facilities permit. Another route applied for is from Christchurch to Timaru, Cromwell, Queenstown and Dunedin with the right of call at Ranfurly or Roxburgh if necessary. Evidence was given by Mr H. M. McKay, who said tihat the company was a private company, the directors being his wife land himself. .He gave details as to the machines and routes, the company having provided for two machines for each route and one in reserve. Mr Goodwin, of the Falcon Airways, asked if Mr McKay would forgo the Auckland-WhangaTei section in favour of Captain J. D. Hewett. He replied that he would sooner cooperato than forgo. Mr T. S. Withers opposed the request for the Auckland-Rotorua route, for which Great Pacific Airways had applied for a daily service. He also opposed the request for the whole Auck-land-Wellington route. and the third route as far as it conflicted with the Great Pacific Airways route between Timaru and Christchurch. East Coast Airways objected to a license being issued for the type of machines proposed, • said Mr J. G. Nolan, on the ground of safety and because the company, having as its avowed intention an extension, when warranted, beyond Gisbornei and Napier, was entitled to some protection from the board in view of its existing license. Wing Commander Grant Dalton agreed and said he considered twinengined machines were the only type suitable for cTvIT aviation.
