After 10 years in business in Hawera as taxi proprietor, Mr J. E’xlev, Albion Street, with Mrs Exley, leaves early next month to take up citrus fruit farming at Tauranga. Both Mr and Mrs Exley have taken a prominent part in croquet as .members of the Park Club.
Since the claim was made by Dargaville of possessing the first feminine taxi-driver in the Dominion, challenges have come from Mas ter ton and WelIngton, going back to 1917. Both records are, however, beaten by that of Mrs Bertha Wilcox, of Gisborne, who commenced driving a. public taxi car in 1916, and has boon in business constantly over since. Mrs Wilcox lias developed a thriving bus service from the taxi work which she continued personally until eleven years ago. She regularly drives her own bus on country routes, and supervises seven other buses and three taxis.
