Miss Joan Hariigan Now Holds two English Singles Titles PRAISE FOR CHILEAN PLAYER OUTPLAYS MISS STAMMERS

Women’s singles.—Miss Joan Hartigan. .(Australia) defeated Miss R. Smith, o—2, G—2. ~ Women’s doubles. —Misses Hartigau and Lawrence defeated Miss Bullock and Mrs Fpntes, 6—4, 10—-S. In the semi-final of the women’s singles at the touiinament Senorita Anita Lizana (Chilean) defeated Miss Stammers, 6—4, G—l. In the semi-final of the men’s doubles at Rome Bo rot ra. and Boussus defeated ... Turnbull and Quist 5—7, 7— 5, G —l, b—o. Miss -Hartigau is now the "singles champion of North England, both hard courts and grass courts.

Senorita Lizana, although only. 20 years of age and 5 feet in height, ]ra.s a- great reputation in Chile. English critics acclaim her and declare that she resembles Mile. Lenglen in cleverness.

Miss Stammers, who is ranked as Britain’s number three player, was unable to counter Senorita Lizana’« terrific forehand and backhand drives and daring drop shots. Doust expresses the opinion that Senorita Lizana, despite the promise shown, is insufficiently experienced to win a W r imbledon title this -year.
