HAWERA TROTS

SUCCESSFUL FITXURE INCREASED GATE RETURNS FAVOURITES again prominent TOTE INCREASE NEARLY £3OOO.

The weather remained line for the second day of the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting, and there was again a large attendance. The track was in excellent order, and the times registered were well within the limits imposed on each distance. The finishes in most instances were exceedingly close, and there was no untoward incident to mar an excellent day’s trotting. Yesterday the totalisator handled £8705 20s, as against £7,(578 for- the corresponding day last year. This made a total for the meeting of £17,345, which was an increase of £2,719 over the amount handled in 1934. The gates this year produced £290 on Saturday and £222 yesterday, a total of £512, an increase of £lls over the amount handled by the same means in 1934.

The match race between Harold Logan and Impromptu, the fourth this year and probably the last, resulted in a win for Impromptu, although the distance between the pair at the finish was probably the finest margin possible without it being a dead-heat. Both the owners were recipients of many eulogistic references from all sportsmen for their action in bringing together the best exponents of the lightharness sport in the Dominion to-day for the benefit of the public. At the conclusion of the Waimate Plains Handicap yesterday, after the president, Mr B. McCarthy, had. extended congratulations to the owner of the winner, Mocast, Mr C. S. Donald, and before tlie presentation of the John Haig trophy, the Mayor, Mr J. E. Campbell, added his tribute. Mr Donald was one of those sportsmen who kept the light-harness sport in existence, he said, and he was pleased to be associated with, the club officials in extending congratulations. The trophy was presented by Mrs J. B. Rowe, wife of the Hawera manager of Johnston and Co., the agents for John Haig and Co. Mr Donald said he was appreciative of the remarks, and hoped to be able to bring a team to Taranaki next year.

Favourites had a. fair day, winning six of the eight events on the card. The other tWo were won by outsiders and returned big dividends to the few investors who fancied their chances. Several horses started .in two races, but the nearest to winning two events was Sylvia Sydney, who got a first and a second. C. S. Donald, the South Island owner-trainer, was the most successful owner yesterday, winning three of the first four races. Taranaki successes were small, only one winner being led in on behalf of provincial owners. As on the first day the musical programme was supplied by the Hawera Municipal Band, under the baton of Lieut. H. C. A. Fox. Prior to each event a review of the form was broadcast from the totalisafor house by Mr Chas. Craig, “ Abaydos,” the wellknoWn trotting writer.
