RUGBY TEAMS ENTERTAINED

COMPLIMENTARY SMOKE CONCERT. HUTTON CUP PRESENTED. At the conclusion of the TukapaEltham football match yesterday afternoon, the Eltham Football Club tendered a complimentary smoke concert to the Tukapa players. The function took place at Mr A. 01.O 1 . Casey s Central Hotel and was attended by all the players and a large number of supporters. . The after-dinner speeches opened with the Loyal toast, proposed by Mr R. Taylor, president of the Eltham ■ Club. Other toasts honoured were “The Taranaki Rugby Union,” proposed by Mr 1L Taylor and responded to by ill* A. G. Whiting; “Tukapa Club ” Mr T. R Bourke—ill - Ron Sarten; “Eltham Club,” Mr Sarten--Dr. D. H. Saunders; “Host and Hostess,” Mr R. Taylor—Mr J. Henley. Mr Whiting, replying to the toast of the union, assured the assembly that the union had the welfare of the clubs at heart-, and this season, the jubilee season of the union, it- was J looking forward to excelling all previ- , ops years. I Mr Taylor thanked J. C. Hutton ! Btcl. for the very fine cup presented for an annual fixture between the Eltham Football Club and any team the club might nominate as a contender. Mr Reg. Lee, coach of the Eltham Club, presented the cup to Mr H. Boswell, captain of the Tukapa team, which he congratulated on its very fine performance and the outstanding sporting qualities displayed by the members.

Mr Boswell, on receiving the cup, expressed the pleasure of the Tukapa Club at being selected by the Eltham Olub to compete for the trophy. He took it- as a. great honour that Tukapa had been thus chosen, and assured the Eltham Club that Tukapa would do its very best to make the fixture one of merit. He drew the attention of the players to the extremely capable manner in which the referee (Mr A. O’Sullivan) had controlled the game apd fhe company honoured Mr O’Sullivan at the request of Mr Boswell by singing “For He’s a- Jolly Good Fellow.”

During the evening items were rendered by Mr E. J. Smith (Eltham;, humorous monologues; Mr M. Pope (New Plymouth), Maori haka; Mr T. Kay (Opunalte), tenor solos. A successful function was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
