HOCKEY SEASON OPENS

TOURNAMENT AT WAITARA. STRATFORD WINS FAHY CUP. Stratford won the Faliy Challenge Cup at the annual hockey tournament at Waitara yesterday, Kaponga being runners-up. Six teams competed, and. owing to Manaia and New Plymouth Territorials not fulfilling their engagements, the teams played in one section, the two leaders playing-off m a final for the trophy. A trophy for the best dressed team was awarded by the judges, Constable J. Tocher and Mr J- R. Bennett to Stratford, Hawera being second and New Plymouth Wanderers third. The referees were Messrs J. R. Bennett, ;R. Grant, J. Ebbett, N, Bond, A. JEvan. and E. Fleet. The results of the matches were: Wanderers 2 beat Urenui 1. Kaponga 0 v. Hawera 0. Stratford 6 heat Waitara 3.

The game was plaved; in a heavy downpour of rain, but the spectators were provided with a oood exhibition of hockey. In the first few minutes of the game Irwin secured a. goal for Stratford and there was no further score. Messrs R. Grant and J. R. Bennett refereed. The cup was presented to the winners at the conclusion of the final by the Mayor, Mr J. Hine, who complimented all the players who had taken part in the tournament.
