CATHOLIC CLUBS CONFER
ASSEMBLY AT GREYMOUTH. RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS. [By GREYMOUTH, April 22. The Federated Catholic Clubs’ conference concluded here to-day. The executive was elected as follows: President, Mr B. A. Quelch; vice-president, Mr J. C. tMowat; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. D. O’Connell; committee, Messrs ACJ. Dowling, N. Jolly, R. Baughan, J. Kerr, W. E. Dawkins, F. 'Smith, R. .Stark and W. C. McDonnell (all of Dunedin). It was decided to hold the next conference at Dunedin. The report recorded the formation of new clubs.
Competitions resulted: — Oration: N. L. Knell (Waimate) 1, S. Mee (Dunedin Hibernians) 2, 11. Wallace (St. Bede’s) 3; 14 competitors. Elocution: W. McGrath (Greymouth) 1, F. Hall (Dunedin University) 2, J. F. Aspell (Christchurch Marist) 3; nine competitors. Impromptu speech: J. Daly (Dunedin Hibernian) 1, H. Wallace 2, d. Meade (Dunedin University) 3,; 3 4 competitors. Debating: G. O’Donnell and. ■ Jolly (Dunedin Hibernian) 1, Williams and Hendren (Christchurch Marist) 2, M. Daly and C. Dtirining (Timaru) 2, J. C. Mowatt. and J. H. Meade (Dunedin University) 4; 14 teams. Tennis: B. Whelan (Waimate) 3, Rev. Father O’Gorman (Hokitika) 2, N. Jolly (Dunedin Hibernian) 3. Billiards: J. Laing (Timaru) 1, A. Twohill (Greymouth) 2, P. Byrne (North-east Valley) 3. Religious questions: M. Malone (St. Mary’s, Christchurch) 1, B. Gallagher (Christchurch Marist) 2, E. McAlevey (Dunedin Hibernian).
Hayward Shield (aggregate points competition): Dunedin Hibernian 12, Waimate 6, Greymouth and -Christchurch Marist 5.
Bishop Brodie presented the trophies at a banquet this evening.
