“FINE THRILLING FINISH”
COMMENT ON SYDNEY CUP FIELD SLOWS TO ALMOST CANTER. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright). Received 12.40 p.m. to-day. SYDNEY, To-day.
Commenting on the Sydney Cup, the “Sydney Morning Herald” says it was not a particularly interesting race, but there was a fine thrilling finish. Sylvandale and Dark Sky were fighting for supremacy when Akuna swept along and joined them. In a punishing finish in which none of the three faltered, they flashed past the post almost in line. The “Daily Telegraph” says 'that Akuna, who was well back at the half mile, won the race with a finish-' ing brilliance which overcame the advantage which faster horses had gained. King March slowed the field down almost to a canter, but what the Sydney Cup may have lacked as a test of stamina was forgotten in a finish that outshone the great Donca'ster battle on Saturday. Sylvandale was definitely the unlucky horse of the race.
The “Telegraph” points out that the winning jockey, Hanley, who is an apprentice aged nineteen, has only ridden four winners in two and a half years.
