TOTALISATOR WAGES.
(To the Editor),
Sir, —In view of the financial success of the (recent Trotting Club’s meeting I Would like to draw the attention of the club (and, incidentally, of its supporters, the public), to the grossly inadequate rate of pay tendered the giri attendants at the totalizator. These girls, as a rule, gave tip their Easter holiday to undergo an arduous two days of exacting mental toil, for which they received the lordly sum of 10s per day, an amount less than our pampered relief workers receive for special work. The girls face the risk of contracting colds at the draughty windows, besides enduring the barrage of a querulous and, in the main, intensely stupid investing public. Moreover, no distinction is made between efficient and non-effi-cient workers, the club apparently endorsing the Biblical maxim in a - varied form, “of giving to the worst even as to the best.” Male workers on the tote receive two or three times the wage allotted the females. I suggest that the Trotting Club make a tardy attempt to. right a gross differentiation by tendering at least a 50 per cent, bonus to those girl workers who reutrned satisfactory statements unvaryingly tlmoughout the two strenuous davs. —I am etc., FAIR.; DEAL.
