Okaiawa Meeting

The second annual meeting of the Oicaiawa 'Women’s Institute was held on Friday, ■when the loj lowing othicials were elected: President, Mrs Good; vice-presidents, Mrs Shearer and Mil's Mortimer; joint secretaries, Misses W. Oldfield and V. Mortimer; Press correspondent. Miss D. Good; committee, Mcsdames Good,. Shcaici, Mortimer and Walsdorf, Misses Oldiield, Mortimer, Green, Stoddart, Ward, L. Mortimer and Sutherland. _ A vote of sympathy with Mrs Blair in her illness was passed and the u ish. expressed for her speedy recoveiv. Thanks also were extended to Mr Evetts, who kindly audited the hooks and to Mesdames Allen and McAsey who helped at the meeting. The winners of a baby’s woollen garment competition were Miss Eva Cameron and Miss G. Stoddart. Laing (piesident) presided, and there was a good attendance. j The report- revealed a most successful year, the membership having reached 56. . The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory credit balance, -although no special efforts had been made -to raise money. The following were the officers elected for the coming year: President, Mrs W A. Strong© , It was decided to elect- the secretary and the treasurer at the committee meeting to be held’ on In day. Mr W. Laing was appointed auditor. The following sub-committees were appointed: Refreshment, Mesdames Clare and Richards; competition, Mesclames Ritchie and McLean; stall, Mesdames Griffin and Sharp. The following dates were fixed tor the various circles to meet: Dramatic, on Thursday at Mrs Penn’s at 7 p.m.; music, on Thursday, at Mrs Laings at, 8 p.m.; first aid, Tuesday, -March ]9 a t Mrs Penn’s at 7 p.m.; gardening, March 12 at Mrs C. Hickey demonstrated the smocking of -a child’s frock. Patea Notes A meeting of the Patea Women’s Institute committee was- held yesterday afternoon when Mrs W . H. vialton presided and also present were Mesdames R- E. Moore, G. Laing, G. Mellar T. Hills and R. S. Crawford, Misses' W. Kenworthy and F. Hamingway and the secretary, Mrs A. A. Before the meeting closed Mrs A\ alton expressed her appreciation ol the cooperation of the committee at all times and wished the incoming committee a successful yeai. _ Members of the committee expressed their regret' at losing Mrs Walton as president. Riverlea Meeting -On Wednesday [there was- an attendance of 50 at the annual meeting, of the Riverlea Institute, when a very interesting afternoon was spent. A ballot resulted ill the following committee members being elected: Mesdames Havre, Southern, Eves, Hughes, Julian, Gargan, Flack, Aliases Rutherford, X. Joseplison, El. Frost and E. Chapman. 1 Mrs Harre was returned as president unopposed. Miss J. Southern was appointed Press correspondent-. It- was decided to celebrate thertirst birthday, which falls on April 17, by a social evening. The birthday cake has been donated by Mrs Gargan. Mrs Havre was elected convener ol the drama circle for the coming yea.. Arrangements were made to ho!u 1 two competitions each month, oiie for > needlecraft and the other for cooking, both to be divided into- two sections, one each for married and single members. The points prizes for the competitions during the year resulted as follows : Miss L. Joseplison 1. Miss J. Southern 2, Mrs Hey , Mrs I lack and Miss L. Rutherford equal 3. Mrs Hey won the draw. Many suggestions were received for the programmes for the coming year and an interesting variety should result. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs Brewer (Ivaponga) and Mrs 11. Riddick for taking charge of tlic ballot and Mr M. F. Voullairc for auditing the books. Mr Voullaire was elected to perform this duty for tlie comimr year. The hostesses for the day wero Mesdames Voullaire, Rotlie, ALisses P. llothe and N. Joseplison.
