HAWERA TEAM DEFEATED

FITZROY WINS TOLO FINAL. FIRST REVERSE IN' TWO YEARS. The Hawera water polo team which has been undefeated for two years* met with its first reverse last night when Fitzroy scored two goals to Hawera’s one in the final of the Taranaki championship. The match provided what was probably the finest exhibition of i>olo ever seen in Taranaki and the spectators roared with excitement from beginning to end of the match.

Hawera attacked hotly at the beginning of the match and rained shots unceasingly at the Fitzroy goal. The Fitzroy defence, however, proved equal to the occasion and the backs Mocked every shot. Each half the pressure was lifted, more particularly in the first spell, when Fitzroy drove Hawera back yard by yard for St. George to drive two goals just before ’half time.

In the second spell Hawera rose to great heights, but were unable to penetrate the defence until too late, when Ryan goaled from a free throw. Good made a last minute’dash up the sideline and shot the ball into the net. Time, however, had ended as the ball left his hand.

Good! was outstanding for Hawera on defence and Ryan, Clarke and Beaven put all the fruits of excellent coaching into operation. The unacustomed opposition, however, was just enough to prevent the champion team turning its potentialities to effect. The game was controlled by Mr M. Smale. The teams were: Fitzroy.;—N. Gardiner; W. J. Toomey, L. Bennett; R. Voullaire; R. Gardiner, 11. St. George, C. Maclean. . Hawera. —K. McGlashan; M. Good, JL. George; S. Gorman; A. Ryan, G. Tleaven, R. Clarke.
