SWIMMING CARNIVAL

FIXTURE AT NEW PLYMOUTH FRENCH • SWIMMERS’ VISIT REMARKABLE PERFORMANCES. T\ hat was considered to- be the most successful swimming carnival ever held at New Riymoutn took place last night, on rne occasion of the visit or tne French champions, Jean Tans and Emil Boussarcl. Two Taranaki records were broken. Miss L. Wickham, Stratford, holder of the Taranaki women's backstroke and breaststroke titles and records and 1 the Taranaki women’s diving championship, brought her 100 yarns oreaststroke time down from 1.35 2-5 to 1.31 3-5 anti J. Henderson, East End, holder of the 100 yards intermediate boys’ title, reduced B. Milne’s 50 yards record of 29 l-ssec to 29sec. An exhibition of diving such as has never been seen in Taranaki before was given by Poussard, who was preceded by W. Hassan, New Zealand champion, and M. Taris thrilled the spectators with his marvellous speed and powerful action. Jean Taris was to .the Taranaki people before last night merely a name, but he and his compatriot electrified 1000 spectators in. a manner which exceeded ail hopes. iPonssard dived 15 times, the final two in response to insistent applause. There was a. pike, an inward pike, a back dive, one anda-half somersaults running, two and a-half somersaults backwards, back dive with pike, half mullberg, inward somersault, pike with a halfscrew, full screw, half mullberg with pike, one and a-half somersaults with a full screw—a stupendous effort—and finally a one and a-half mullberg, and a plain dive of much grace.

The style of Taris was a revelation and he skimmed over the water in a manner which indicated that he was superior to the best in Australia and 1 Japan. Breathing in unorthodox fashion on left and right witli three arm strokes between each breath Taris swam with a wide sweep of the arms, gaining full length from; each stroke with perfect balance and relaxation, the full length of His spine being, out of the water.
