EXTRACTS FROM “HAWERA STAR” MARCH .d, 1885. A London cable states that 1000 Fenians are being - equipped in Chicago for the purpose of assisting the Mahdi in the Soudan rebellion. ***** A reduction is being made in the Survey Department, and 35 officers in various parts of the colony have received notice f hat their services are to be dispensed with. The saving to the colony will be about £IB,OOO. This saving is not as large as the Government intended, but the SurveyorGeneral is unable ,to further reduce his staff without seriously injuring the service and causing public inconvenience. * * * * * The Hawera Road Board advertises that on and after March 9, through traffic will have to pass through the Mokoia township. *****

At the meeting of the Dunedin Licensing Committee a. number of publicans in the north end of the city, where ten o’clock licenses are the rule, applied for an extension to twelve, which is the hour in the south end of the-city. The bench said it had determined to make no change till the annual meeting in June. ***** At a meeting of the Normanby Town Board in reference to defaulting ratepayers, it was decided to draw the names from a hat to see who should be sued first, and this was done, the clerk being instructed to sue the unfortunate ones at once. ***** The acceptances for the Egmont Handicap are Administration, Eusileer, Bayard, Deceiver, Buzzard, Lord of the Hills and Maid of Eccleston. ***** The new Anglican Church at Patea is to be opened this evening by the Bishop of the Diocese.
