PATEA THE CHAMPIONS

WEST COAST SURF TITLE HACKSHAW—SEARLE SHIELD . . I LIFE-SAVING AT WANGANUI I Surf life-saving champions of the Wanganui, Taranaki and Wellington Centres were seen in action at Castlecliff Beach, Wanganui, , yesterday, when the West Coast championships, for the Hackshaw Searle Shield were held. Nine clubs were represented, including three from Wellington, three from New Plymouth, and Castlecliff, Patea, Ohawe (Hawei'a). Winners of tlfl various events were:--- > Hackshaw Searle Shield.— Patea. Gibson Cup (four-man alarm).— Fitzroy A. Williams Cup (march past).—lsland Bay. Surf Teams Relay.—Gonville A. Beltrnan’s Championship.—C. MacLean (Fitzrdy). Conditions were ideal for life-sav-ing in the surf, in contrast to the conditions prevailing last at New’ Plymouth for the Dominion championships. There v r as a good surf, with an ebbing tide, but a set to the north troubled swimmers to a certain extent, and gave the organisers a great deal of worry in getting the buoys in position. A crowd of some 10,000 spectators w’atched the programme of events with interest in spito of a stiff breeze, while the afternoon was brightened by the playing of the Garrison Band. Patea, winners of the Hackshaw Searle Shield in 1933, w r ere again the! popular winners yesterday. This team has gained experience and a high standard of efficiency during the last few weeks, their participation in both the Taranaki and Dominion championships assisting considerably to their present competency. The personnel of the team was practically the same as that which competed at New Plymouth last week-end, when the team acquitted itself w r ell against the Dominion’s best. Milliken’s swimming in the

belt, resulted in Patea putting up second fastest time in the heats, Lyall Bay’s beltman, A. Cunningham, gaining fastest. Land drill for this championship was held in the morning, and in this Island Bay A and Ohawe gained a lead which helped them in points in the waterwork heats competed for in the afternoon. Patea’s win ivas the result of good all round work in water, j line, land drill and general discipline, j in spite of twice drawing the position i for No. I 1 buoy which was handicapped by a large hole close inshore and right in the line of the buoy. In the Williams Cup march past event, Island Bay, in their black costumes, with white wings, withstood all competition and retained the trophy. In all such events the judges mark to a great extent on the pacing, and they noted yesterday that Island Bay made .the least jiiumibef, 122 to the 100 yards. Others reached anything up to 167, only four making less than 130, as against the estimated number of 120 to the 100 yards. Time is the main factor in the Gibson Cup four-mana larm event, but yesterday’s competition resulted in varying times being recorded, mainly due to the state of the tide. In conjunction with this event, the West Coast beltman’s championship is decided, and C. J. Mac Lean (Fitzroy, New Plymouth) won this title for the second year in succession. This competition was exceptionally close, A. Cunningham (Lyall Bay A) being only 1-5 set. behind Mac Lean in the final of the event. In this final, the times were all a great deal faster than those put up in the various heats, and was a most exciting race to the buoys. Bythis time in the afternoon there was a much harder surf coming in, and Mac Lean put in a great finishing dash to the buoy. At the conclusion of the programme the president of the Wanganui Head Centre of the Royal Life-saving Society, Mr F. K. Turnbull, presented the Hackshaw Searle Shield. Detailed results were as follow:

SURF BOAT AT NEW PLYMOUTH

A NEW EXPERIENCE

The Old Boys and Fitzrof Surf Giwb members during the week-end spent some hours in learning the art of shooting breakers in a surf boat. The boat used was Maranui No. 1, the only surf boat in Now Zealand, brought to New Plymouth for the national surf championships and left temporarily at Strandon. Under the guidance of Mr T. Hewitt, a member of the Maranui club executive, about 12 learned the rudiments of a useful extension of life-saving methods that is also a thrilling sport. The first crew to go out on Saturday comprised T. Hewitt (Maranui, capt.), C. Allen (Old Bovs, stroke), N. Gardiner (Old Boys) and R. Clayton (Fitzroy), W. J. Thomas (Old Boys, bow oar) and K. Rea (Old Boys, patient.
