Mr F. Bell, Hawera, has been successful in obtaining bis amateur radio operator’s ceitificate under an examination by the Post and Telegraph Department. Air Bell is a member of the Hawera Radio Society.

The following bowlers from Hawera will participate in the Dominion tournament which will open at Auckland on Monday: Messrs W. W. Thomas, J. W. Thomas, G. Villars, A. O. Smith (Park Club), L. J. Bull, J. Winks, F. E. Clarke, H. S. Maslin, M. J. Squire, H. N. Murray, J. Foy, and P. Bourke (Hawera club). The death is reported by Press Association message from Christchurch to-day of Mr Edward Washbourne, aged 92 years, of Inns Road. He was a Christchurch pioneer, having arrived with his parents in 1850. He first farmed at Leeston and later at Sedgemere and was a life member of the Canterbury A. and P. Association and a foundation shareholder of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association. The death has occurred of Mrs E. J. Whiting, who was at the age of 77 years one of the pioneers of the Eltham district. Her death occurred at the Hawera hospital after a long illness. Mrs ’Whiting arrived in the district about 18S8 and with her husband took a prominent part in breaking in the bush land around what is now known, a s Jerseydale- They shared and endured all the hardships of settlement in a bush district. Mrs Whiting was a daughter of the late Mr William Lister', Wanganui. The funeral took place at Eltham on Wednesday, the service being conducted by the Rev. H. Spencer and Adjutant H. J. Parkinson. There was a family of nine, four of whom predeceased Mrs Whiting. The surviving members are Mr A. G. Whiting (Eltham), Mrs E. J. L. Whiting (Hamilton), Mrs J. C. Chamberlain, Mrs F. Vincent and Miss B. Whiting (all of Eltham).
