KAPONGA RELIEF DEPOT

REA’IEW OF ACTIVITIES

The unemployed relief depot which gave assistance to some eleven families of relief workers at Kaponga during the winter months, has now closed and the accounts have been audited. The depot opened on June 8 and ran for 17 weeks, finally closing on October 5. The year begnn with a balance from last year ot' £7 14s, which sum was raised late in the year by a local entertainment. Added to this the sum of £lO 10s raised by an appeal sponsored by tlio town board, the funds in hand for this year totalled £l7 15s. The expenses incidental to the collection of funds and advertising the appeal for funds and clothing amounted to £1 4s 3d. After having a turnover of £SO .for the period during which goods were sold to relief workers at greatly reduced prices, the depot, closed with £3 14s 04d in hand which has ben set aside for next year. The ladies’ committee in charge of the depot, Mrs A. V. Tait (secretary), Mrs J. Guy and Mrs J. A. Dawson, deserve the thanks of the community for their efforts each week on behalf of the relief Avorkers and their families. The committee in turn desires to thank Mr R. E. AVilliams for the use of a shop during the earlier part of the year and also to Mr P. H. Harding for the. use of one of his shops for the major portion of the season. Much valuable assistance also was rendered to the depot by the Women’s Division at Awatuna and Auroa, and the Women’s Institute at Riverlea. The appeal for clothing was given a splendid response and much assistance was given various families in this connection. A.ll donations of cash and hind have been acknowledged through the Press with the exception of a late nonation from Mr D. Malone. The committee also desires to thank the Kaponga business people, who supplied goods at reduced prices, and Mr J. Guy for free cartage.

CROQUET CLUB OPENING. ' The weather on Monday (Labour Day) was gloriously fine for the open- ' ing of the Kaponga ladies ’ croquet lawns. In addition to a large gathering of members and their friends., there were many visitors, including two carloads from Okaiawa and one from Eltham. The club president (Mrs R. E. Williams) welcomed the visitors and declared tho green open for play, the first ball being put through the hoop by Mrs C, H. Brewer. Visitors very favourably commented on the excellence of the lawns. Six trophies were competed for during the afternoon and were annexed bv Okaiawa (three) and Kaponga (three).
