Two lower g?adi; Rugby teams of the Hawera club were successful m matches played against visiting teams at tiie Hawera. showgrounds on Saturday. In a first junior match, the home team defeated Johnsonville (Wellington) by 25 points.- to nine. A fourth grade match between Marist (Wanganui) and Hawera resulted m a win for the latter team, the score being 15 points to six. In the Hawera v. Johnsonville match a stiff southerly breeze assisted the home team to score . twenty points to nil in the first spell. Hawera. were definitely the superior team in this spell. On the change over, Johnsonville displayed improved form and scored nine points to their opponents’ five. Hawera were still the J ! superior team, however, and held a . i territorial advantage. Hawera kicked off with the advantage of a stiff southerly breeze and quickly took the hall to the Johnsonville line. Shortly after a scrum, Har. lingtin gained possession and dived over for a try. The kick failed. Within a few moments of the kiclcout. Hawera forwards brought play to the Johnsonville line, where Harrington again scored. Hayman converted. From tlie kyekout Johnsonville retaliated. but a strong, rush fell short ! of the line. Forward pressure brought Hawera- back to the attack and Johnsonville were compelled to force twice in succession. Shortly after, Johnsonville infringed and Hayman kicked a good penalty goal. Hawera’s next points came when, (following: a scramble on the Johnsonville twentyfive, Butchart gained possession and raced for the line to score. Havman’s kick was unsuccessful. Hawera gradually worked play down to the Johnsonville line, .where Lendrum sent on a well-timed pass to Brown, who scored. Hayman’wi kick failed. IHa wera maintained the pressure and with the exception of isolated dashes bv the opposing! forwards, dominated play. On the Johnsonville twenty, ifive the hall came from the ruck to (Stratton, who cut in and transferred 'to O’Dea. O’Dea had little , difficultv in scoring near the corner. McDonald could not convert. Half-time sounded with the scores unaltered: Hawera 20, Johnsonville 0. Shortly after the resumption. Hawera infringed, hut Hall could not goal with a kick from a difficult position. Johnsonville, playing with the advantage of the wind, were having the better of the game at this stage, and Halliwell scored, following a -solid back run. Hall’s kick failed. From the kickout. Hawera attacked and an attempt by Clapham to goal from a penalty kick was unsuccessful. Forward pressure brought- Johnsonville back to a scoring position and from a scramble in the corner, Hailin'ell went over for his second! try. The kick failed. Johnsonville’s final points were added when Hayman was offside land Hall goalee! with a good kick. The best run of the. day took place' when O’Dea gained possession near half-way and raced fen- the line, hut was tackled within an ace of scoring. Hawera maintained the pressure and in the closing stages of the game McDonald handed on the ball to Hayman. who scored. Clapham converted. Full-time sounded with play at midfield: Hawera 25, Johnsonville 9. Mr S. Hunt was referee.

VISITORS ENTERTAINED. At the conclusion of the match, members of the Jolinsonville team were the guests of the Hawera club at a complimentary dinner. A short toast list was honoured as follows: “The King,” “The Johnsonville Team.” proposed by Mr L. H. Clapham (president of the Hawera Club) and responded to by Messrs F. Jacobs and W. McClelland (manager and caotain respectively of the Johnsonville team); “The Hawera. Team” (Mr Jacobs—Messrs R. Lendruin, captain, and N. Grant, coach) ; “The Referee’’ (Mr W. Oropn—Mr S. During the evening Mr Jacobs- made a presentation to Mr A. Richardson, club captain, for the interest he had taken in the- Johnsonville team. The Johnsonville team was entertained at a- dance held in the evening at the Foresters’ Hall. Music for tre dancing was supplied by Guy s Orchestra and Mr B. Johnson was M.C. The- hostesses were Mesdames E. M. Lendrum, A. Appleyard and J. |B. Rowe. The committee responsible for the arrangements consisted of Messrs N. Grant, L. -Smith, A. Applevard, E. R. Honeyfield, R. Lendrum and V. J. Stratton. Mr J. Matheson was doorkeeper. On Sunday morning members of both teams' visited the Normanby dairy factory. The various processes of eheesema-kinjg were explained to the visitors. Shortly after a visit to King Edward Park, the Johnsonville team were farewelled at 2.30 o’clock. A presentation was made to Mr Jacobs on behalf of the members of both teams.
