SUPPORT FOR HIGH SCHOOL. Support for the proposal to establish a district high school at Eltham was given by the Elthafti Progress Committee at a meeting on Friday night. •Mr O. N. Taplin spoke very strongly in favour of the Eltham School Committee’s efforts in this respect and moved that the Progress Ooinmittee give its support. Other members present also si>oke in favour of a high school being established and it was decided that a copy of the resolution be sent to the Taranaki Education Board. The report of the night watchman (Mr J. H. Drabble) was received and Mr I. J. Bridger (chairman) praised the excellent work that he had done in the past and stressed the importance of the services of a night watchman to the town.

Mr C. N. Taplin also remarked on the good work of Mr Drabble and the necessity of having a night watchman. Th© financial report showed a credit balance of £2. The collection for the children’s Christmas treat amounted to £36 0s 4d and the total receipts amounted to £3B 0s 4d. The expenditure on toys was £36, ferns £6 and sundries £3 Is 3d, making a total of £45 Is 3d and leaving a debit' balance of £6 19s Bd. As certain contributions were due it was estimated that the debit balance would be only £4. Toys to the value of £2 were still on hand.

It was decided to leave the matter of Christmas toys till the annual meeting. PERSONAL AND GENERAL

A meeting of the Rawhitiroa Hall Committed held on Thursday last was well attended', those present being Messrs J* Gerrihoefer (chairman), Ford, Johnson, Robinson, Tipler arid, the secretary (Mr J. Johnson). Reference was made to the very valuable assistance given by the ladies of the district iri connection with various functions held in the hall.

Mr and Mrs R. Belcher, of Egmont Village, are spendng a holiday in Rawhitiroa.

The monthly meeting of the W.D.F.U. was held in Eltham last week, when a large number of member® were present. In the absence of Mrs J. Cocker, Mrs Jorden presided. Owing to the illness of the secretary (Mrs Olliver) Mrs W. 11. Treweek is the acting-secretary. There was very little business. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess i(Mrs Williams) and a vote of thanks was passed for the use of her room. Mrs Perry, in charge of the Eltham Army Boys’ Home, left on Friday on a short visit to Auckland. Mr D. Leatham, of the Power Board staff, is at present on annual leave and is spending a holiday in Christchurch. | The Mayor (Mr I. J. Bridger) has received the sum of £lO from the recent art union funds “My Lucky Star.” The Mayor’s relief fund now stands at £64 8s lOd. Of this amount about £3O will be held for Christmas goods to be distributed among the unemployed. Mr and Mrs E. R. Knuckey, of Rawhitiroa, left by car on Saturday for Auckland, where they will join the Niagara en route for a long holiday to he spent in Fiji. Mr and Mrs J. Cocker, of Rawhitiroa, who have been on a holiday in Hamilton, returned to Eltham on Friday. Mr W. P. Jenkins, of Rawhitiroa, who has been on a holiday spent in the Waikato, where he attended the National Jersey sale, has returned 1 to Elthani. RAWHITIROA SCHOOL. On Thursday last the Rawhitiroa .school was visited by two members of the Taranaki Education Board, Mr J. C. Barclay and the secretary of the board (Mr H. W. Insull). The chief agriculture instructor was present. After addressing the chilren an inspection of school buildings aud grounds took place, and a satisfactory report was given by the visitors.
