“ECONOMIC PRICE”

MOTE BY AUCKLAND BAKER'S BREAD COUNCIL MOOTED AUCKLAND, May 3. / That some master bakers in Auckland have considered the possibility of the establishment of a Metropolitan Bread Council similar in its functions to the Milk Council was revealed by inquiries to-day. Although no official information was forthcoming that a bread council was definitely mooted, it was stated in a number of quarters that the master bakers were desirous of obtaining a more economic price for their bread. “I have heard a Bread Bill on the same , lines as the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Act is being prepared in Auckland," said Mr T. MdNa'b, Mayor of Mount Eden ‘‘l think it is absolutely wrong to raise the prices of food which people simply must have. Milk and bread arc the last two things which should be controlled." When the matter was referred to the Mayor of Auckland, Mr G. W. Hutchinson, he said he had heard nothing of the proposal to establish a bread council. “We want some relief from our troubles, and it' the Government will not give us relief we must help ourselves " said one prominent master baker. J “A Bread Bill has been discussed, but we do not mind what form the relief takes. If a bread council is established it will be run more cheaply than the milk council. We cannot go on paying good wages while other bakers are obtaining labour at a cheap rate. We cannot join them to the award as the legislation gi'ves them the right to s J tand out. ’ “We do not know anything at all about a bread council in Auckland," said Mr S. (Green, secretary of the Auckland Master (Bakers. “AIL we lonow is that the master bakers are attempting to get an economic price tor , their bread." L Mr C. Cowan, president of the Master Bakers’ Association, said he had no official announcement 'to make on the matter.
