WESTFIELD STOCK SALE

RISING TENDENCY SHOWN AUCKLAND, May 2. There wais a firm tone in all sections at the Westfield fat stock sale to-day. The short offering last week Was responsible for the keen demand, and values showed a rising tendency. Beef cat-tie wore yarded in rather less than average numbers ; the quality was good with some large lots of well-finished •sorts. Ox beef imi>roved in price by Is to .seir at 2ls per 1001 b, and other classes of beef were correspondingly firmer. Increased numbers of calves came forward, and sold under keen competition, with the result that prices showed an improvement on those of last week. Runners made 37s to 725, vealers 18s to 60s. There was a very firm sale in the sheep section, and values improved in all classes. The mutton quality was good throughout. Wethers were very firm and ewes improved as much as Is Od. Wethers, prime 23s 0d to 295, unfinished 18s to 245, ewes, prime maiden 22s 9d to 245, prime 16s 3d to 235, unfinished 10s to 18s 9d. Lambs were offered in fair numbers, and again sold under keen competition, with values improving on recent rates. Lambs, prime 17is to 27s 9d, unfinished 10s to 18s 6d. The yarding of pigs was well up to average. Fats sold well at slightly improved rates. Store pigs were not up to standard, and there was an appreciable drop an price. Baconers 42s to 68s, porkers 18s to 38s, large stores 14 s to 20s.

Tiiere was an overflow entry of fat cattle at the Addington market to-day, entries in the other sections being oj nominal size. • Eat sheep, fat lamos, good, (young: ewes, dairy /cattle and vealers sold well, but fat cattle of inferior quality and store lambs were easier.

The store sheep entry was drawn from Marlborough, Nelson, the south, and Chatham (Islands, and for the most part comprised a mixed display. Good younp- ewes were in keen demand. DUNEDIN, May 2. There was a large yarding of fat cattle numbering over 400 at to-day’s Burnside sale. Heavy bullocks: were firm, but others were fully 10s a head easier owing to over-supply. Extra prime heavy bullocks £ll 17s 6d, prime heavy £8 10s to £lO 2s 6d, medium £6 15s to £8 2s 6d, light down to £o ss, extra prime heifers, to £7 12s 6d. extra prime cows to £5 2s 6d. JOHNSONVILLE YARDING

LITTLE CHANGE IN PRICES.

There was little change in prices at the Johnsonville sale on Wednesday, when a full yarding of sheep and cattle came forward. The quality of the bullocks offered was hardly up to last week’s yarding. Taking this into consideration, prices showed no alteration. Cows and heifers had a good sale at late rates, and vealers were in keen demand. The sheep offered were generally of good quality, and prices for wethers were on a par with last week’s rates, while ewes were slightly easier. Lambs were dull of sale and met a poor demand. Cattle.—Heavy bullocks £8 2s to £7 13s, bullocks £7 6s to £6 10s, heavycows and heifers £5 12s. to £5 ss, runners £2 18s to £2 10s, vealers £1 18 s to £l.

Sheep.—Prime heavy wethers 26s lOd to 25s 6d, prime wethers 25s to 23s 9d, prime extra heavy ewes 22s to 21s 7d, prime heavy ewes. 21s to 20s 6d, extra heavy lambs 23s 3d to 23s Id, heavy lambs 22s 6d to- 20s 3d.
