TENNIS ASSOCIATION’S DANCE,

PRESENTATION OF SHIELD

(From Our Own Correspondent.) 'Members of the Matapu tennis team were the gue'sts of the Egmont Tennis Association at a dance ‘held in the Matapu Hall on 'Monday evening. There was u good attendance and .a most enjoyable evening was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mr J. ■Hooker’s orchestra, with an extra by Miss M. Guy. Visitors were present from neighbouring districts and kindred clubs, including Mangatoki, Okaiawa, ‘Hawcra Park and Eltham.

After supper the president of the. association, Mr IT. Famine, congratulated the club on its performance in winning the Egmont Shield this season. He added that ho would like to see more teams next year. He then presented the shield to Mr -*-• iGuy, club captain, who replied on behalf of the team.

Mr L. Pease, secretary of the association, thanked the ladies for their support and help at the matches with afternoon tea. He also thanked Mesdames Guy and Seed, who were responsible for the supper arrangements and the Misses Guy and ‘Gatenby for their work during the afternoon. Mr O ’Sullivan, president of the Matapu club, thanked the association for the honour done to the club in arranging the dance and then presented Mr D. McCallum, the club’s secretary, who has left the district, with a pipe as a token of -appreciation of his services rendered as secretary of the club during the past 18 months. There was a very small attendance of householders at the meeting held on Monday evening in the Matapu School, \ only nine being present. Mr A. .T. Prestidge was voted to the chair. The chairman submitted a report and balance sheet tor the year ending February 28, 1934. The total receipts for the year were £134 12s 7d and the total expenditure £lO7 6s lOd, leaving a credit balance of £27 5s 9d. The year commenced with a roll number of 90, con'tinued the report. In the second term the roll - number increased to 95 and in the third term the number increased to 101 and the school closed for the summer holidays with 98 on the roll. The average attendance for the year 1933 was 89 out of 93.5. This year commenced with ia roll number of 94 and an average of 87. Ten pupils made the possible attendance and received book prizes and about 20 pupils gained the Department’s regular attendance certificates. At the annual examinations 1-2 Standard 6 candidates sat, nine gaining proficiency anS two competency certificates. The scholars on the whole progressed satisfactorily, only four failing to be promoted. In August last Miss ißremner resigned her position, which was temporarily (filled by Miss Longbottom for one term as relieving assistant. Miss Findlay had since been appointed to till the posit tion permanently and (Miss Longbottom jas additional assistant. Miss Longbottom had since been replaced by Miss Jackson. The dental _ clinic was continuing efficiently; 35 children from this school were treated during the year. Shortly after the last annual meeting the newly-elected committee arranged a working bee to get shingle from the Kapuni' River bed to lay an area of concrete from the back door of the school to the gate of the paddock in front of the shelter shed's, the concrete being laid by relief labour. The school football team had a most successful year, scoring 59 points to nil in the group competitions. The final match with New Plymouth Convent was a draw and it was arranged for oroli tciim to ‘hold the cVtclLcod. (Shield for six months. The team also gained second place in a seven-a-side tournament, held at Manaia, for which they received a football. 'The girl's basketball team also had a successful season. The thanks of the above teams were due to those who conveyed them to the matches. ..
