AID TO EX-SOLDIERS
DISTRESS THROUGH UNEMPLOYMENT. DEMANDS AT CHRISTCHURCH. CBy T^egrapD—Cress Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 1. After a keen debate marked by plain speaking, the annual meeting of the Christ church Returned Soldiers’ Association endorsed a motion passed by the Auckland Association requesting the New Zealand Association to take -immediate steps whereby the conditions affecting unemployed returned soldiers may be ameliorated and stating that the present conditions were nothing less than slavery. The president, the Rev. F. T. Read, said he hoped the motion would not be supported, as the camps in New Zealand could not be compared to slavery ; but other members said the association had too long adopted a subservient attitude and must now boldly demand better conditions for ex-solcners."
