SCHOOL 'COMMITTEE MEETING

At the final meeting last week of the retiring Matapu School Committee there were present: Messrs A. J. IPrestidgo (chairman), L. Cleaver, O. Robertson, W. T. Seed (secretary) and 'W. 11. Stevenson. An apology for absence was received from Mr H. Riddick.

It was resolved that the caretaker be instructed to repair the flagpole.

Mr Stevenson was given permission to spend a sum of money on supplementary readers as allowed for 'by tho education board.

A circular from the Boys and Girls’ Clubs Association was read, asking for the committee’s support to the movement-. The matter was left with the incoming committee. The report of the headmaster stated that tho roll totalled 95 pupils and regular attendance had been maintained. 'One case of diphtheria and two contacts from the same family were excluded from the school until the period of infection had passed. 'The school was closed for Easter on Friday, Monday and Tuesday, and on April .16 and 17 for teachers’ refresher classes at Eltham The term would end on May 4, when the school would close for two weeks. To date 28 children have paid the yearly fee of 2s 6d to Tne dental clinic, but none had as yet received treatment. The school medical officer stressed the necessity for laying the dust during sweeping and advised the use of sawdust. Verbal permission for children to use the school water was given. During the period lawns and hedges were cut, playing grounds marked out, broken gate posts and broken window panes renewed, and some of pinewoed sawn into short lengths. Mr Walsh kindly mowed the playing area.

Supplies of pinewood and rata were delivered at the school.. Tt would be neeessarv to saw the wood for use in the round stove into short lengths. 'GENERAL The old girls’ basketball team travelled to Mangatoki last Aveek and enjoyed h. friendly match Avith. the local team, Matapu winning by >l2 goals to two. The visitors Avere afterAA-ards entertained at afternoon tea. A euchre and dance social Avas held recently in the Matapu Hall in aid of the MaAvhitiAvhiti pa. The . flag “500,” arranged by the 'Matapu branch of the W.D.F.U., in aid of hall funds, and held on Thursday evening, did not draw as large an attendance as usual. However, those present spent a very pleasant evening. The first prize Avent to the tablet occupied by Mrs T. Huckstep and Miss F. Robertson and Messrs T. Huckstep and W. Murphy. The consolation prizes went to Mesdames Guy and Blair and Messrs C. Blair and L. Ralph.
