PARK CROQUET CLUB

CLOSING OF' SEASON TROPHIES PRESENTED In order to celebrate the close of a successful season members of the Park Croquet Club and visitors assembled on Saturday afternoon at the club lawns. Competitions were held and the trophies won during the season were presented. The president (Mrs A. D. Murdoch), in making the presentations, said that members would agree the club had had a very happy season and were glad to see such a largo attendance of visitors to celebrate the closing day. The club had made great strides since it was formed and it was good to see that during the past year the lawns had been enlarged and had been in good playing order. In addition, two new shelters had been built which were much appreciated by visiting players as well as by. members. The committee had also arranged for improvements to the pavilion and had made additions to the kitchen. These were very useful in the social life of the club. During the season many competitions had been held and .matches were closely contested, and this had made play most interesting and altogether the club’s year had been one of the best they had had.

Mrs Murdoch paid a tribute to the enthusiasm and efficiency of the honorary secretary, Mrs J. Exley, and cordially thanked Mrs W. A. Spragg for donating a handsome shield to the club for a championship trophy. .She referred to the great success of Mr Exley in winning the A grade silver button presented by the New Zealand Croquet association for the champion of champions in South Taranaki. She added also that Mrs J. Horton had been runner-up in the Q grade competition. The club’s team also had been the runner-up in the competition for the Campbell Cup. In conclusion, Mrs Murdoch congratulated winners of trophies and complimented all players on their good sporting spirit. She also commended the committee and. honorary treasurer for their good work. Posies were presented to all present bv Mrs T. 0. Hobbs.

The list of trophies presented was as follows:—

'Spragg ’Shield. —,A champion: Mr J. Ex ley; runner-up, (Mrs F. Chadwick. ,B champion.—Mrs Spragg; runnerup, (Mrs Horton. Exley Cup.—A handicap singles: Mrs Barrow; runner-up, Mrs F. Chadwick. Hey Fruit Bowl. —B handicap singles: Mrs Jackson; runner-up, Mrs Horton. _ Handicap doubles. —iMesdames F. Chadwick and Spragg; runner-up, Mr J. Exley and Mrs 'Outran. Wednesday competitions.—A grade (monthly contests): Mrs W. Shaw (November), Mrs F. Chadwick ((December), Mrs J. Exley (January), Mrs A. Murdoch (February), Mrs J. W. Harding (March); B grade, Mrs Horton (2), Mrs Dowden, Mrs O’Brien, Mrs Spragg (winners in consecutive months). Consolation doubles. —iMesdames Sinclair and T, Ho uus, Mesdamcs Barnett and F. Meredith.

Closing day competitions were won as follow: Driving, Mrs Hey and Mr Exley (after a draw); golf croquet, Miss' Allenby 1, Mr Orindrod 2; hurry scurry, Mesdamcs F. Chadwick and Spragg; crazy, Mrs Spragg 1, Mrs S. Barrow 2 .(after a play-off). A competition for a trophy given by Miss. Allenby resulted in a win by Air Grindrod, Airs Godfrey being second. At the conclusion of the prize presentation ceremony the president presented Alessrs (Ross and Warner, of the park borough staff, with tributes from the club in recognition of their valued assistance during the season. Mrs Murdoch said the staff had kept the lawns in excellent order and had always been willing to meet the committee’s- wishes in every possible way to the advantage of the club and the members.

At the close of the afternoon tea, a hearty vote of thanks to the president in appreciation of her good work was carried by acclamation.
