TALKIE ATTRACTIONS

GRAND 1 THEATRE. “BROADWAY THRU’ A KEYHOLE” Tlie Grand Theatre, Hawera, was packed to the doors on Saturday evening when the United Artists attraction “Broadway Tlira’i a Keyhole” was presented.' This is undoubtedly an excellent musical drama. Some of the most spectacular dance scenes, yet presented on the .screen are seen. The song numbers include “ When You were the Girl on the Scooter and I was the Boy' on the Bike” and “You are My f*ast, Present and Future.” The supporting programme is an excellent one and includes “Around the World in Song,” the latest News. Reel and “Mickey Mouse in Giant Land.”' The programme will be presented for the last time to-morrow evening. Seats may bo reserved at, the Opera House booking office. “BANGING LADY” At the reopening of the Hawera Opera House on Friday evening the Metro-Golchvyn-Mayer musical hit “Dancing Lady,” which has just completed a, season of two record-breaking weeks in Wellington, will be presented. Through oameracraft and mechanical "ingenuity the motion picture screen becomes a. gigantic kaleidoscope in the presenting of spectacular musical ensembles in this film, in which Joan Crawford and Clark Gable are costarred. In one of the scenes each of the chorus beauties, revolving through a. maze of mirrors, can be seen thirty times at once, the effect created being an endless parade, of beauty'. In other scenes complete changes of costume and) setting are witnessed. Still other scenes whirl upon the screen in a dozen different angles simultaneously. The most thrilling scerte of all, perhaps, is in the finale in which Miss Crawford dances through an impressionistic number of modern tempo. Although oameracraft secrets are carefully guarded, it is declared that while these scenes are actually' photographed by the camera as they appear on the screen, the trickery lies in optical illusions 'scientifically computed by a- corps of engineers. Robert Z. Leonard directed the film from the J ames Warner Bellah novel of Broadway backstage life. The dance numbers were staged by Sammy Lee and Eddie Prinz. In several numbers Miss Crawford becomes the dancing partner of Fred Astaire, noted New York revue star who for a number of years, danced •with his sister, Adele. Nelson Eddy and Art Jarrett sing the new songs' which include “Let’s go Bavarian, ’, “Heigh Ho,” “Everything I have is. Yours ” “That’s tlie' Rhythm of the, Day’' and ‘'Dancing Lady.” Franohot Tone heads the impressive Supporting cast of her new picture. Prominent roles are also played by May Robson, Winnie Lightner, Robert Benchley, Ted Healy and his stooges.
