FERIGUSSON TO' IMPROMPTU

Unusual interest was shown in the Auckland Trotting Club’s autumn meeting, which opened at Alexandra Park yesterday, owing to the appearance of the five best pacers in the Dominion in an invitation match. Ideal racing weather attracted a large attendance, and the totalisator handled £20,123 Ills, against £17,718 at the autumn meeting last- year, an increase of £2405 10s. Although the track was heavy good times were registered. Giving a great exhibition of pacing, Harold Logan fought out a, thrilling finish with the Australian horse Auburn Lad in the Invitation Match, the New Zealander winning by a length and a quarter. Prolonged cheers greeted the winner, with applause for the gallant Australian. After issuing a determined challenge Auburn Lad was again narrowly beaten by Impromptu in the Fergusson Handicap, in which Harold Logan and Lindbergh were scratched. The race was witnessed by the Gover-nor-General and party. Worthy Light maintained his reputation by winning the Franklin Handicap, making a total of eight firsts and two thirds in ten starts ths season.
