DAMAGE IN 'QUAKE ZONE

LATE EDITION

PREPARATIONS FOR REPAIRS COUNCILS CONSIDER SAFEGUARD WORK UNDER SUPERVISION. PERMITS AT DANNEVIRKE: (By Telegrupti—rre=a Association.) DANNEVIRKE, March 10'. Earthquake matters Were considered hast night at a meeting of the Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. M. D. Smith, said the council should be very thankful that Dannevirke got off as lightly as it had. There had been no damage to the water, sewer and gas mains. He had reports of damage elsewhere, but who, he asked, could give an accurate statement of the damage done? Dannevirke had certainly suffered as much damage as anywhere, but was not sending out sensational reports. The town hall had been damaged, but to what extent he was unable yet to say.

The council appointed an architect to make an immediate report on the condition of the hall. The Mayor said the duty of the council was to see that all buildings in the main streets were made reasonably safe.

It was decided that before any parapets and other damages were repaired the owners must obtain permits from the council, such applications to be referred to the Public Works Department. This is not to apply to the re-erection of chimneys. The overseer is to inspect all buildings considered dangerous, with power to serve notices on the owners calling upon them to make, the necessary re-

pairs. It was decided to make application for participation in any scheme of assistance that might be decided on by the Government. Owing to the town hall and other theatres being damaged no pictures have been shown here since Monday.
