CHIEF GUIDE VISITS GIBRALTAR

, Have you ever heard the phrase “as strong as the Rock of Gibraltar”? Well, if vou saw that old rock you would certainly think that that is a very good simile, for it is indeed a wonderful sturdy, great miniature mountain, sticking right up out of the sea, and standing as a huge bluff dominating the Straits. It has seen a lot of_history, the invasion 1 of- Spam by tne Romans at a time when the Roman Empire. practically held all Europe. Later the Moors came over from Africa and took Spain, and some of the very great attractions in Spain even now are the ancient Moorish towns and buildings and ruins that are left. . The influence of the Moors is felt s,o much in the architecture of so many of the houses and the whitewashed Avails and deep rounded archways are so attractive in the blazing hot sun and deep blue sky that one associates with that Southern land. __ Gibraltar is, as you know, a. Britisn Colony, and lias belonged to Great Britain for over a hundred years, and it is a very important harbour and dockyard for our Navy. . The population of Gibraltar consists very largely of soldier's and sailors and Air Force men and their belongdngs, and so most of the Guides and Btoai’nies fire girls', whose parents are quartered in Gibraltar just for a year or bwinrr to this you may imagine that there is not very much chance of keeping the same members of a. company for verv long at a time, and it. is most distressing how often changes come in the patrols and sixes. Things may be going forward awfully veil with company work and then suddenly a regiment is moA-ed, and the company gets half its members removed in one day! But in .spite of that they are a jolly lot, and I was so glad to see three companies and two packs all working away with keenness.' ... There are also a few Gibraltarian girls, daughters of people ivlio always live on “The Rock.” and probably of Spanish origin; these in many eases talk Spanish, and that makes it just a little difficult to carry on with games and Guide activities with another language mixed in with our usual: Guide jargon. It is A-ery nice to realise, though, how Guide activities .appeal to these girls, and' that they can enjoy playin o- the game alongside those of British origin. These companies that 1 sa-Av have got splendid club rooms qf their oavii, and the different patrols had got .some good collections' of shells, home-made miniature rock gardens, log hooks, etc., and the two Brownie packs wlio mustered' for me to meet' them Avore about as happy a. lot as I have seen for a long time.
