MOCK TRIAL OF HITLER

FOUND “GUILTY” AT NEW YORK. PROTEST BY EMBASSY. United Cress Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright; WASHINGTON, March 8. A protest was made to-dav by the German Embassy against a mock trial held last night at New York, at which Herr Adolf Hitler, the German Chancellor, was found guilty of “crimes against civilisation.” The State Department, however, declined to interfere. The Ambassador, Herr M. M. Luther, is understood to have called when the trial was first announced and protested against it as an attack on the head of a friendly Government. No action was taken on the ground that the trial was ol a purely private charafter and any interference would be against traditional American freedom of speech. Among the many witnesses appearing in the trial against Herr Hitler were Mr. Alfred Smith and the foimer Under-Secretary of State, Mr. W. Moley. A former Secretary of State, Mi- Colby, was “judge.” The judgment was: “We declare the Hitler Government is compelling the German people to turn back from civilisation to antiquated, barbarous despotism, menacing the progress of mankind, and is at present a threat to civilised life throughout the world.” ESTRANGEMENT WITH VATICAN. BERLIN, March 8. Herr Hitler is most anxious to stop the growing estrangement with the Vatican and is sending Herr von Papen to Rome to see the Pope. He will arrive, significantly, on tne same day as Dr. Dollfuss, Austrian Chancellor.. and Dr. Gombos, Hungarian Prime Minister.
