WAVE OF SPANISH UNREST
THOUSANDS ON STRIKE. MEASURE OF MARTIAL LAW. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegrapn Copy right;., MADRID, March 8. With a general outbreak of the Socialists seeming inevitable the Government has proclaimed a measure of martial law. Nearly 100,000 workers are on strike at Madrid and in many provinces. Serious trouble is feared. The police ' have been given power summarily to arrest anyone and' search, homes and business premises. Street gatherings are prohibited. The wave of unrest continues to rise. Strikes, outrages and plots are spreading and direct action is incessantly preached. Five were shot dead in connection with violent robberies in various towns in Barcelona. Senor Lerroux, the Prime Minister, following a Cabinet meeting, said that energetic measures would be adopted, but he could not reveal what they would lye. The Labour leader, Senor Caballero, told the British United Press representative that the day Senor Robles, the Right leader, takes power the workers will throng the streets and will not he satisfied with smashing the Rightists and Fascists, but will seize power for themselves.
