Mr r C. A. Wilkinson (Egmont) on account of urgent business was yesterday granted three days’ leave of absence by the House of Representatives. General Sir Alexander Godley, who was at one time m command of the New Zealand Military Forces, has retired from the British Army, states a London cable. Mr Aylmer Vallanee, formerly assistant editor of the “Economist,” has been appointed to succeed Mr Tom Clarke as editor of the “News Chronicle,” says a London cable. At the official opening of the bowling season by the Hawera club yesterday the president i(Mr G. A. Burgess) referred with .sympathy to the bowlers who since last season had “passed on to their rest.” Mr Burgess said there had been three, one of whom was Mr E. iM. Dillon, an enthusiastic member who died last Saturday. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect.
