Favoured by perfect weather, the Wanganui amateur championship tournament was continued on the Belmont links yesterday, the semi-finalists m the various competitions emerging as a result of the afternoon’s play: In the Wanganui amateur championship contest" the first round produced surprises in the defeat of the title-holder, W. O’Callaghan, by J. M. Hussey, one up, and the return to foim of J. Goss, who ousted G. M. Chong, 3 and 2. In the second round Cathio the Castlecliff champion, accounted for Hussey, though the latter took him to the last green, while Goss maintained his best form to defeat Haworth 4 and 3. The Eltham player, H. P. Dale, put Ekstedt, the Manawatu plus one player, out of the running, winning 2 up. while- Silk was not troubled to win from Harding by a comfortable margin.

In their first- round game Hussey won from O’Callaghan. Winning the first in 3 and the second in 4, O’Callaghan lost the third when Hussey placed his second stone dead for a- 3. The fourth was halved and the game was squared at the fifth, which Hussey took in 3 to 4. The next three were halved, O’Callaghan laying Hussey a stymie at the eighth. O’Callaghan turned for home one up when pushed his tee shot into the rough and took tliree putts. The next two were halved in three and five respectively, out Hussey again squared the game at the short 12th, when O’Callaghan found a bunker.. At the 13th Hussey went into the lead, and the next was halved. At French Pass, the 15th, Hussey’s tee shot was over the hill to the right, but O’Callaghan took three putts, and Hussey was enabled to halve the hole. At the next O’Oallaghan’s second was eight feet from the pin and he holed in 4 to square the game. They halved the 17th in fives and at the 18th Hussey’s second was ten feetfrom the pin. O’Callaghan’s putt for a 3 was eighteen indies from the pin, and when Hussey holed in 3 he wen one up, to oust the title-holder. O’Callaghan was out in 37 and back in 39, while Hussey took 39 and 38, Ip® six at the ninth providing the difference. Dale beat-Whitcomhe in the morning round, being out in 38 and home in 40. Dale was donny one and clinched the game on the last green. In his morning round against Roi Goss, Silk was 2 up at the turn and went on to win 4 and 2,-Vn the afternoon he played steady golf against Harding, though it was not brilliant, the outward journey taking 38, while he came home to register level fours and win fi and '4. Haworth defeated E. L. Abbott 4 and 3 in the morning, coming home m a fine 33. H-e was one down at the turn but squared the game at the tenth and went on to establish a winning margin. J. Goss accounted for Haworth in the second round.
