MUTILATION OF BOOKS
ADMISSIONS BY STUDENT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Sept. 28. Charges involving the theft of about 130 books and the mutilation of a large number of illustrated magazines' ud periodicals were admitted by a medical student, aged 22, in the Police Court to-day. The majority of the books were stolen from the Athenaeum. Accused, whose named was suppressed, also pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted suicide. The police stated that when the student’s room was searched a large number of books and a big bundle of clippings from magazines were found. He also admitted stealing several medical works ’from a seoond-hand dealer. When in the police cell accused broke the glass of the window and out a blood vessel in his wrist with a sharp piece of glass. Be was found in a low condition and was removed to hospital. He was a fourth year medical student.
Counsel said that accused was of. a type known to the medical profession as an introvert.
The magistrate adjourned the case for 12 months upon accused undertaking to enter an institution as a voluntary patient.
