OPUNAKE SURF CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD SEASON’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Opunake Surf Club was held on Wednesday evening, when Mr J. N. Stephenson presided and there was an attendance of 2-5 members. Tn a. review of the past activities the committee stated that the financial position of the club was still sound, there being a. credit balance of £lB 2s Id. Several dances were held during the season, all realising small profits. The annual ball was a huge success and helped the funds to the extent of £l4. The beach galas at Christmas also were most successful. Club teams entered several competitions ad gave very commendable displays. The Weston Cup was lost to Old Boys, whilst the Taber Shield team regained that trophy from Old Boys by a fair margin of points. Other competitions entered were the Ballin Cup (second), Pennant junior competition (unplaced), march past championship (first), Australian Surf Competition (first and second), Grey Cup relay championship (lost to Stratford), and in the William Henry Memorial (New Zealand championship for four-men teams) held at Fox ton the club was placed third out of 19 teams from all parts of New Zealand. Congratulations were due to Mr ll'. S. Dudley for his fine showing in the Flannagan Cup open sea race, in which he was placed second, to Miss P. Smith (winner of the Dalryinplc Cup and ladies’ eL'ub night winner), to Mr D. Burton (men’s club night winner) and Mr O. Burton (boy’s winner), also to Mr D. Burton on winning the Hurst Cup and to the various teams.

In moving the adoption of the report and ■balance-sheet, Mr Stephenson congratulated those who were responsible for the excellent state of the club’s affairs. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, 'Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P.; president. Mr W. H. Haggett; vice-presidents. Dr. Griffin, Messrs It. S. Jenkin. C. M. Clare, and W. JP. S. Dudley; lion, secretary, Mr S. M.

Smith; treasurer, Mr J. Glouston; club captain and instructor, SI? P. Smith; deputy club captain and instructor. Mr L. Brown; hon. surgeons, Drs. Griffin and Watt; executive committee, the president, secretary, treasurer, club captain, deputy captain and Messrs A. Sinclair, B. S. Dudley, G. Gundy and G. Trotter; delegates to the Taranaki Centres of the Royal LifeSaving Society, New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association and the Taranaki Surf Association, Mr C. H. Stephenson; house and gear steward, Mr J. Dudley.

Subscriptions for .the ensuing, year were fixed at senior men 5s and juniors under Id years 2s Gd. The delegates to the Taranaki Suit Association were instructed to nominate Mr F. G. Ryan as Taranaki delegate to the New. Zealand Surf LifeSaving Association. Regarding the proposal to run a ■swimming sports for the Bgmont County schools, the secretary was instructed to circularise all the county schools outlining the proposals. The trophies for this carnival would no grunted bv the Herbert Smith Trust. & Votes of thanks were accorded Mr C. H. Stephenson as town delegate to the club, to Mr and Mrs J. W. D. Millson (London) for, donations of medals for the John Wilson Memorial Cup competition, to the Press and all who hud assisted the club in the past. The president, secretary and Mr L. Brown were delegated to represent the club at the forthcoming public meeting to revive interest in the Opunake Beach. . At the conclusion of the meeting those present were entertained at supper served bv the retiring committee. Mr Haggett, in proposing the health of the retiring president (Mr Stepheuson), .said the club could not let him leave Opunake without wishing him every hanpinests and health _in his new sphere. The company joined m singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellows.” Mr Stephenson suitably replied.
