Heavy cargoes arriving at New Plymouth have caused a largely increased volume of business, on Taranaki main and branch railways during the last few days. When interviewed by a "Hawera Star” reporter this morning the Hawera stationmaster (Mr It. S. Allwright) mentioned that accommodation at the local yards was taxed to full capacity. All trains arriving from the northern end of the province were heavily laden with all classes of merchandise and carriers were working long hours in an endeavour to cope with an almost unprecedented rush of traffic. Rakes of trucks filled the sidings from end to end and one particularly large consignment consisted of 800 tons of bitumen to be distributed by motor lorries among the various local bodies of South Taranaki. Instead of their weekly social at the Winter Show Buildings in Hawera last evening members of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club attended the Opera House as a group for the screening of a special film depicting mountaineering and other activities at Tongariro National Park and Chateau Tongariro during the 1932 winter sports season. Excellent photography and the splendid treatment accorded a somewhat difficult subject were much appreciated by lovers of the mountain, the film being regarded as one of the best yet seen in Hawera of New Zealand’s alpine attractions. At the conclusion of the theatre performance members of the club adjourned to the club room at the Winter Show Buildings for supper. Among the manv visitors entertained were representatives of the Stratford Mountain Club, who received a cordial welcome to Hawera.

The weekly euchre party in aid of the railway' social hall improvements was held in Hawera on Wednesday evening, when there was a further large attendance of card players. Airs G. Boesley and Miss Cummane won 19 games, the highest score this season, and divided first and .second prizes. In the men’s section Air Duggan was first with 16 games and Air O. Arnold second with 15 games. "Silent” prizes were won by Airs Alahoney and Air E. Nixon and special prizes to the winners of the first 1(> of 11 games played were won by Miss Cummane and Airs J. Lyon.
