In the professional tennis tourney America defeated France by foulmatches to one. The matches included the following: Barnes defeated Plaa, 2—6, 6—4, 6—3, 6—l; Tilden defeated Gochet, 6—3, 6—4, 6—2; Tilden and Barnes defeated Cochet and Plaa, 6—2, 4—6, 6—l, 6—4. Despite the fact that he is aged 40 against Cochet’s 32, Tilden reproduced his old form and completely outplayed and outlasted the Frenchman, who failed to stand the strain of a terrifically fast first set. Cochet was unable :o cope with the speed of Tilden’s returns.
