ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

HEAVY LIBERATION S PLANNED. RELEASE OF 65.0U0 FRY. Members of the council of the Hawera Acclimatisation Society, assisted by interested helpers, made a trip to the rivers at the Eltham-Upunake Road crossings during the week-encl iOr the purpose of liberating trout fry. Hitherto the council had adopted a policy of early liberations on account of the shortage of .space at the hatcheries, but with the improvement of accommodation there, it is now possible to hold up liberations until the fry have attained better size and strength. The total batch in brown trout fry this season is 250,000 and, of these, 65,000 were liberated along the El-tham-Opunake Road in the streams from the Kaupokon'ui River to the Otakehp River. Commenting upon the release, the president of the society (Mr B. C. Bennett) stated that it was rarely conditions bo co-ordinated so well for liberations. The rivers were in splendid order with plenty of water after the recent rains, the weather was perfect and the fry, which had travelled well went away from the moment they ouclied the water showing: that- they were in perfect condition and really strong swimmers. Following the usual policy the council 'ivill make liberations at points along the Skeet Road in the near future then taking the Main South Road areas and lastly the territory m between these roads will receive liberal supplies. Prospects for the coming season :<ppear to he exceptionally bright and many fishermen have their “possies spotted” for the opening day which this year occurs on Sunday next.
