(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Sept. 11. The. Tariff Commission resumed the hearing of evidence this morning. Grog and Company requested the maintenance of the present- rates_ on roasted coffee, coffee essence, jelly crystals, sauce in vessels of ten gallons capacity and under, unground spice, vanilla beans and ground spice. It was stated that the firm was using New Zealand made bottles and jars -to a considerable extent and was satisfied with them. Mr Samuel Jacobs brought before the commission the difficulty retailers experienced when increases were made in the dutv on tobacco and cigarettes in apportioning such increase among the lower-priced and mo-st commonly consumed linos, and asked that in future impositions of duty on tobacco and cigarettes be increased at the rate of Is 3d per lb, or any multiple of such sum, and that the duty on cigarettes be imposed at the rate of 8s per 1000 or any multiple of that sum. Wholesale tobacco merchants could then charge an extra -Id per lb on tobacco and an extra 8s 4d on every 1000 cigarettes. this addition making provision for cash discounts to retailers
