FOUNDER’S DAY SERVICE. CHURCH PARADE AT HAWERA. Yesterday at the Methodist Church Hawera, the Hawera Scouts, Cubs and Guides attended the [service arranged to commemorate the foundation of the two movements. The Rev. John Ings, pastor of the Hawera Baptist Church, conducted the service and with him were the Rev. H. Curran and Adjutant H. McKenzie. The lesson was read by Mrs John Houston, Divisional Guide Commissioner. A full parade of Scouts, Cubs and Guides attended under their officers, Scoutmaster Head,' Scoutmaster La.v. Cubmistress Miss Doreen Britland and District Guide Captain, Miss Constance Fi'ee. The Colours of the units present were received at the pulpit by the preacher and further impressive ceremony was carried out at the end of the s<*Vice when the Scouts, Cubs and Guides re-affirmed the Promise they had made when joining their organisations. j: The preacher took for his subject the symbolic meaning of the Union Jack and urged his hearers to remember the traditions of loyalty and service which the British flag stands for. A representative congregation of parents- «nd friends of the organisations was present. Mrs King, organist of the Metholst Church presided at the organ. An apology for his unavoidable absence was sent by Scout Commissioner Horner. The Rev. Whitby James and the Rev. W. D. Morrison-Sutherland also sent apologies , SERVICE AT MANAIA. The Scout Founder’s Day service was held yesterday morning at the Presbyterian Church at Manaia, there being a large attendance of the .local Scouts, Cubs and Guides. The Rev. R. Miller conducted the special service. The re-affirmation of the Promise made when joining the organisation was taken by Scoutmaster Payne for the Scouts and by Mrs J. Houston for the Guides. Miss Beryl Bridge, Captain of the Guide Company, presided at the organ. ceremony at patea. A large number of the public, together with the Guide and Scouttroops; were present at the open air service in the Patea- Domain yesterday to commemorate the birthday of. Sir Robert Baden-Powell. The Guides were under Captain T, Prescott, and the Scouts under. Scoutmaster H. S. Pauliug. Hymns were played by the Patea Municipal Band under Conductor N. Christiansen. Prayers were led by the Rev. A. W. Smaill, the prayers being said by Captain M. Carey, Salvation Army. An inspiring address on the growth and value of the Scout and Guide movements was given by the Rev W. H. Walton, who made an appeal to all members to have a lofty and spiritual ideal in their work.
