SENIOR FREE PLACES
STATE EXAMINATION RESULT’S. NO ANNOUNCEMENT UNTIL THURSDAY. * Approximately 103 pupils attending the Haver a Technical Hugh School sat for the senior free place examination at the. end of last year, but so far the Education, Department has made no announcement of the results-. The school reopens next week, and l parents complain that the delay leaves practically no time for arrangements tp be made with the principal or for fitting out the children with the necessary uniform. When interviewed by a “Hawera Star” reporter this morning the chairman of the Board of 'Governors (Mr R,. S. Sage) said that he had received numerous inquiries and he sympathised with parents and guardians in their anxiety. The department yesterday notified its intention to release the lists of passes on Thursday, but the delay was hardly fair either to the pupils or to the parents. He agreed that the suspense was needless, and in the event of, certain of the pupils failing to qualify that possibly opportunities of finding other occupation had been missed in the long period that had elapsed: .since the examination. In previous wears it was the custom to award free places partly by accrediting and in some cases by examination. Last( year, however, all candidates had to sit for the examination. Other inauiries elicited the information that draper** and clothing stores in Ha.wera had experienced less demand for materials for school uniforms or ready-made goods suitable for thirdyear pupils- than at this period in previous years, indicating that parents were undecided and were delaying their purchases until the examination results were announced.
