CONTESTS AT AUCKLAND STEDMAN; BEATS MALFROY (By Telegraph—l'ress Association.) AUCKLAND., Jan. 29. Semi-final matches in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championships were played in Saturday in very hot weather. A. U. Sted-

nian (Auckland) created a. surprise by defeating C. E. Malfroy in the semifinal of the men’s singles. Malfroy had beaten his opponent three times this treason, at Wanganui, New Plymouth and in the Wilding Shield play at Wellington. Stedman had shown only moderate form on the preceding days but rose to the occasion magnificently with powerful and accurate driving. Results of the semi-finals are: Men’s singles.—Stedman beat Malfroy, 5 —7, 10—8, 6 —2, 6 —3 j Bartleet beat Sturt, 2—6, 6—l, 6—o, 7. —3. Ladies’ singles.—Miss Macfarla.ne beat Miss Beverley 6—-2, 6 —4; Mi-ss Knight beat Mrs Melody 6—3, 7—o.
