The Be Valera party has a substantial lead in the election so far. The declared figures this evening were:—• De Valera 36 r,< Cosgrave 15 Labour 4 Centre 5 Independent 6 Received 2.50 p.m. to-day. At midnight the\ state of the parties was:— De Valeraites 44 Cosgraveites 29 Others unchanged. There is little doubt that the de Valeraites are assured of a majority enabling them to go ahead with their republican, policy. The “An Phoblacht,” the chief Republican newspaper, boldly claims, “Let’s hear no more of bargains with England,. but instead the rallying cry mast be ‘On to the Republic.’ ” Mr Sean O’Kelly, speaking at Dublin to-night, said that the result of the election was going to have a tremendous effect on the future of Ireland and make it self-supporting and selfsufficing with industrial, as well as an agricultural arm. Businessmen in Dublin are aghast at the result, which they regard as a calamity, but they admit it is useless to disguise the fact that de Valeraite aggregates at the poll are greatly in excess of that of last election and may easily finish the Independent and all other parties. The trend of the election is reflected on the Dublin Stock Exchange, where heavy selling of local securities, such as Guinness ordinary and Bank of Ireland stock, which ' was seven points lower at 290 for Guinness shares.
