TARANAKI OPEN TOURNEV POST SECTION PLAY OPENED :H,A,4V!FJRAj RINK ELIMINATED Three rounds of post-section play in the Taranaki Centre bowling tournament were decided at the Yogeltown green in New Plymouth yesterday. Of the 11 teams that qualified in- (section play H. Cottier (Inglewood), J. Goldstone- (4Vanganui), T. Williams (Fitzroy), A l . O. Smith (Park) and J. Lobb (West Find) were eliminated .in postsection play and A. Higgs (New Plymouth) and J. 44”. Turnbull :(4Vest End), with two lives, J. Buchan (Te Aroha), R. B-oult-on (44”ost End), J. McNeill (Fitzr-oy) and A. K. Smart (New Plymouth), with one life, qualified for the fourth round. The green was playing perfectly and as a result some brilliant bowling was witnessed, holding -the attention of a- large gathering until the final game was decided after 7 -o’clock. Many of the games were very close. Of the two teams from outside Taranaki one from Wanganui was eliminated leaving J. Budhan* (Te Aroha) with one- life. The remaining five teams are from New Plymouth Clubs, two having two lives, so that- there is a strong prospect of the trophies again remaining in Taranaki. th-c-ugh if they are taken away to Te Aroha the win will be a- popular one.

In the morning Buchan defeated Smith by two points. Singles ill the first eight heads :saw Buchan lead 6 —2. Smith added a three and alternate singles saw Buchan lead B—6 on the 12th head. He then drew away to double his score on. the next five heads whilst Smith remained stationary. Smith then took a turn to add one on the ISth head and two threes. He had to score another three on the final head to tie, but managed only a single. Jn the second round Smith eliminated IT, Cottier by seven* points with a. head to play. Smith established a lead of 11—3 on the 10th head and it proved sufficient, as though Cottier, held his own thereafter lie was able to reduce the gap by only one. 44 r ith one life Smith required to win the third round game to enter the fourth round, but lie was defeated by Turnbull, who had 14 points to spare. I RO4VLEIRS ENTERTAINED COMPLEMENTARY SOCIAL The Taranaki Bowling Centre entertained visiting bowlers at a complimentary social at the Kawaroa Park pavilion in New Plymouth on 44 reclnes<lay evening. Mr F. A. Quin (Hawera) president of the centre, presided over a. largo attendance and a happy time was .spent. A short toast list was honoured interspersed with an admir-l able programme of songs and humorous sketches and community singing. During the entertainment Mr A. K. ed 'hearty congratulations to the Hawera. Club’s pair, Messrs Maslin (lead) and Squire (skip) on, their success in winning the Dominion, pairs tournament "at "Wellington.. The 'chairman announced that the Taranaki Centre would be visiting South Auckland Centre this season, and he expressed the hope that bowlers wishing to make the trip would hand in their names as soon as possible so- that they could notify the South Auckland friends as to the number of rinks it might expect.
